Siemens announces second major wind turbine
order in the U.S. within one week
Erlangen, Germany, April 3, 2008 (News Release)
Siemens Energy has been awarded another major order for a wind farm in the
U.S. with a capacity of nearly 325 megawatts (MW). Siemens will supply 141
units of its 2.3-megawatt turbines for the Biglow Canyon Wind Farm Phases 2
and 3 in Sherman County in Oregon. The purchaser is Portland General
Electric Company (PGE), a fully integrated utility that serves more than
804,000 customers in Oregon. This is the second major wind order from the
Pacific Northwest that Siemens has publicized within one week. On Monday,
March 31, the German-based company announced an order for 130 wind turbines
that would produce nearly 300 MW in Washington State. The combined value of
the two orders totals more than USD1.1 billion.
The Biglow Canyon Wind Farm Phases 2 and 3 will produce enough power to meet
the electricity demand of approximately 100,000 households. Phase 2 of the
project is scheduled to be operational in late 2009, and Phase 3 is expected
to be on line in late 2010. The Siemens scope of supply consists of
delivery, installation and commissioning of the 141 SWT-2.3-93 wind turbines
with a capacity of 2.3 MW each, including a five-year warranty and separate
service and maintenance agreement.
"Wind power is a rapidly growing source of electricity in the U.S. and the
two major orders from Washington and Oregon will strengthen our position as
one of the leading suppliers to the world's largest market for wind
turbines," stated Andreas Nauen, head of Siemens' wind business. "With
nearly 1,000 MW installed or under contract in the Pacific Northwest alone,
Siemens is helping to meet the growing demand for clean electricity in one
of the most dynamic regions for wind power development in the world."
