US House panel gives EPA until Wednesday to answer subpoena

Washington (Platts)--14Apr2008

A US congressional committee that subpoenaed the US Environmental
Protection Agency over documents related to regulations on greenhouse gas
emissions has now given the agency until Wednesday to turn over the papers.

EPA was supposed to answer the subpoena Saturday at the risk of further
court action, but the agency requested and received additional time.

The US House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming
earlier in April subpoenaed EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson to obtain
documents related to the agency's response to a US Supreme Court decision
requiring EPA to determine whether it should regulate greenhouse gas emissions
under the Clean Air Act.

The committee is seeking specific documents related to the agency's
proposed regulations for GHG emissions from vehicle tailpipes and its finding
that these emissions create an endangerment to public health and welfare.

Johnson had promised to turn over the documents to the committee by the
end of 2007, but did not do so.
