Green Initiatives Featured at Electric Utility Conference

SAN FRANCISCO - (August 27, 2008) -- News Release

The Executive Committee of the Utility Purchasing Management Group (UPMG), an electric and gas utility industry association announced today that it will feature several sessions presenting current initiatives that are environmentally focused. The conference, to be held September 15-16, 2008, in San Francisco, will be the association’s 77th annual conference. When the organization was founded in 1924, finding a balance between operational efficiencies and protecting the environment were concepts that did not exist.

Several speakers will share their successes in minimizing environmental impact.

At the conference, M. Bridget Reidy, Senior Vice President and Chief Supply Officer of Chicago-based Exelon, will speak about her company’s work in building an industry-leading green supply chain. Recognizing the value of collaboration, Exelon is working with its top suppliers to encourage them to voluntarily disclose their greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. The company is also collaborating with others in its industry to promote green procurement. A green supply chain is a critical component of Exelon 2020: A Low-Carbon Roadmap, the company’s plan to reduce, offset or displace more than 15 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year by 2020. This is more than Exelon’s total annual current carbon footprint.

The two-day UPMG Conference has dedicated 25% of the presentations to sustainable practices and related topics. The Utility Purchasing Management Group is affiliated with the Institute for Supply Management (ISM).
