Partnership to create commercialized algae for biofuels

Aug. 14

A seed investment corporation is partnering with the University of Washington to commercialize technology to create commercially available strains of algae to produce biofuels.

Allied Minds Inc. and the university have created AXI LLC, a company that will be responsible for developing algal strains that can produce ethanol on a commercial level. Algae is emerging as an option to produce ethanol because it avoids the fuel versus food argument, said Rose Ann Cattolico, the biology professor at the University of Washington who has developed the algal technology.

"This technology will permit the economic use of clean algae as a viable replacement to petroleum-based fuels," said Christopher Silva, CEO of Allied Minds.
