Huge Iowa Windfarm Will Supply Power to N.C.
Nov 25 - The News & Observer
North Carolina's 26 rural electric cooperatives will subsidize wind power
generated in Iowa.
The N.C. Electric Membership Corp., which provides electricity to 900,000
customer accounts in this state, is subsidizing electricity generated from
wind in Iowa by a subsidiary of Florida Power & Light.
Six rural coops are jointly subsidizing the entire 150 megawatt output to
help meet new renewables requirements. Under a state law, 10 percent of
electricity sold by coops in 2018 must come from solar, wind or other
renewables, or from energy efficiency savings.
A portion of the renewables requirement in this state can be met by
subsidizing out-of-state green energy producers. The wind subsidy satisfies
about 2.5 percent of the organization's 2018 requirement.
N.C. coops include the Piedmont Electric Membership Corp., which serves
parts of Durham and Orange counties; and Wake Electric Membership Corp.,
which serves parts of Wake, Durham and Johnston counties.
