Group Sues Mich. To Regulate CO2
LANSING, Mich. - Feb 18 - Sunday Gazette - Mail; Charleston, W.V.
A citizens group is suing to force the state to regulate greenhouse gas
emissions when considering proposed coal-fired power plants. Citizens for
Environmental Inquiry, based in Presque Isle north of Alpena, says the law
defines carbon dioxide as a pollutant. The group has been fighting a
proposed coal plant near Rogers City. The Michigan Department of
Environmental Quality responds that neither state nor federal law requires
carbon dioxide to be regulated at this point. The state is waiting for
direction from the federal Environmental Protection Agency before deciding
whether to continue with carbon dioxide rules. The DEQ has received five air
permit applications for proposed coal-fired plants in Michigan.
