Senators promote renewable energy in new bill

Feb. 15

Three U.S. senators have introduced a bipartisan bill that promotes further development of wind power and other renewable energy sources nationwide.

Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., Olympia J. Snowe, R-Maine, and Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., introduced the American Renewable Energy Act on Feb. 14.

The measure contains two key provisions: creating strong, consistent incentives for private sector investment in renewable energy by extending key programs like the Production Tax Credit for five years, and establishing an aggressive, nationwide renewable electricity standard. The standard would require utility companies to purchase at least 20 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by the year 2025.
