Casella Waste trucks will refine their own oil

Jan. 14

Casella Waste Systems Inc. expects to avoid using some 200,000 gallons of oil each year and save hundreds of thousands of dollars by installing on-board oil refining systems on their trucks.

The Rutland, Vt.-based solid waste management company plans to put the equipment on nearly 850 vehicles and expects to save about $600 per vehicle per year through reduced oil maintenance costs.

A company called Oil Purification Systems Inc. is currently working on Casella vehicles and expects to have the trucks at 43 locations outfitted with its oil refining system by March.

"We are keenly interested in technologies and processes that are built on the idea of resource sustainability and conservation -- in short, that save both money and scarce material resources," said John W. Casella, chairman and CEO.
