Direct Energy reaches deal for renewable energy
credits
Jan. 16
Houston-based utility Direct Energy has reached a deal with ten Texas
cities to sell them 13,000 renewable energy credits.
The credits will offset 7,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Several
members of the Cities Aggregation Power Project made the deal to buy the
credits from Direct Energy.
"This was CAPPīs first foray into renewable energy, and thanks to our
partner, Direct Energy, itīs been an overwhelming success," said Jay Doegey,
CAPP chairman. "As environmental issues continue to move to the forefront of
the Texas energy community, I am confident we will be increasing the
purchase of RECs, for the benefit of Texas cities and their citizens, in the
future."
The CAPP cities involved in the deal are Addison, Arlington, Carrollton,
Eastland, Euless, Frisco, Highland Park, Plano, Sweetwater and Watauga.
Direct Energy will purchase the renewable energy credits from five West
Texas wind farms, which have a total capacity of 813 megawatts, over the
next 15 years.
