National, state and local group oppose Yucca plan
Jan. 11
A dozen national organizations and 68 state and local groups filed
comments to the U.S. Department of Energy expressing strong opposition to
the nuclear waste site proposed for Yucca Mountain, Nev.
The comments were filed Jan. 10 as the Energy Department said it planned to
file its long-delayed construction and operating license application to the
U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission by June 30.
"The Bush administrationīs rash rush to begin the Yucca licensing proceeding
is a blatant attempt to make the dump a done deal before the next,
potentially anti-dump president enters the White House," said Kevin Kamps of
Beyond Nuclear, a national watchdog on nuclear power and radioactive waste
issues.
Beyond Nuclear, Clean Water Action, Environment America, Greenpeace,
Physicians for Social Responsibility, and Public Citizen were among the
dozen national groups filing comments. The 68 regional and local groups
represent 27 states.
In addition to expressing concerns about the safety of the nuclear waste
disposal site, the groups are concerned about potential risks associated
with shipping the waste to Nevada from throughout the country.
