Schott Solar Inc. will build a new solar energy technology manufacturing facility in Albuquerque, N.M.

The $100-million, 200,000-square-foot plant will start producing photovoltaic modules and receivers for concentrated solar power plants in 2009. It initially will employ 350 workers. Schott Solar, a subsidiary of Schott AG in Mainz, Germany, plans expand the facility, investing a total of $500 million and increasing the workforce to 1,500.

"According to both industry analysts and our own projections, the market for solar energy will double over the next five years," said Udo Ungeheuer, chairman of Schottīs board of management.

Schott chose the New Mexico location in part due to the stateīs 20-percent renewable portfolio standard, which requires 4 percent of the stateīs retail electricity sales be generated from solar energy by 2020.

"Schott Solarīs decision to create clean-tech jobs in New Mexico demonstrates that our state is at the forefront of the clean energy revolution," said New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.
