2009 Energy Costs to Increase Almost 10%

Tuesday, the U.S. Energy Information Administration forecast that electricity prices will climb an average of 9.8% in 2009. Only a month ago, the agency was forecasting a 3.6% increase for next year. The new forecast projects that electricity prices will climb 5.2% in 2008, an increase of nearly 1.5 times the projected 3.7% increase that was forecast in June.

Advanced Green Technologies, a renewable energy technology distributor, based in Ft. Lauderdale has been working side by side with utility companies to help defray the rising costs of energy. Solar power can provide distributed generation which reduces the strain on "peak demand" at power plants and lessens the need for transmission lines and the energy loss associated with them. Documented fuel and energy savings reach anywhere from 15-30% across the grid. "We have been trying very hard to help defray the rising costs of energy," said AGT Vice-President Yann Brandt. "Our partnerships with utilities and the current tax credits in place, make solar energy viable and affordable."

Many states have generous tax incentives and renewable energy credits in place. However, the Federal renewable energy tax credits are set to expire on December 31, 2008. There is legislation pending that may help to extend the credits into 2009 and beyond. "As long as a system is put into use by the deadline, owners are still able to take advantage of up to a 30% Federal credit in addition to any state approved incentives," says Brandt.

Currently, AGT is working closely with the utilities and governments of Florida, California, North Carolina, Arizona and Oregon.
