Dominion to build coal-, biomass-fired power plant in Va.

July 1

Dominion Virginia Power has commenced construction of a 585-megawatt coal-fired power plant that also will burn up to 20 percent biomass to fuel its boilers.

The $1.8 billion Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center in southwest Virginia will be one of the cleanest of its kind, according to the company, which is a subsidiary of Dominion Resources Inc. Construction is scheduled to take four years.

Dominion is responding to the projected growth of electricity demand of 4,000 megawatts from its customers by 2017, the equivalent of some 1 million homes. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality issued the final air permits for the plant, June 30.
