EPA test for haz. waste at Ind. flood sites comes out clean

June 27

The U.S. EPA has assessed 30 Indiana counties for hazardous materials and releases associated with recent floods. The agency did not discover any significant hazardous debris or chemical releases.

On June 20, at the request of Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the EPA began looking for hazardous materials, oil, orphan containers and sites that might present an imminent danger to health or the environment. FEMA funded the $150,000 assessment operation.

FEMA, to date, has not requested the EPA provide assistance with the cleanup, but EPA officials said they are prepared to provide further assistance if needed.
