Excelon reveals carbon footprint reduction project
July 15
Chicago-based utility Exelon Corp. has unveiled a plan to reduce or
offset 15 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually by 2020,
more than it currently generates.
The plan, called "Exelon 2020: A Low-Carbon Roadmap," includes several
initiatives the company will pursue to reduce its carbon emissions as well
as those of its customers and suppliers.
Exelon will reduce its own footprint by reducing its energy consumption and
operating at the highest environmental standards, said John W. Rowe,
chairman, president and CEO. It also will help customers reduce their
greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency programs and a portfolio
of green energy products.
The company plans to expand its low-carbon generation fleet and develop new
technology to replace higher-emitting sources of energy production. It also
will continue to press for federal climate change legislation, Rowe said.
