Florida's St Lucie Reactor Involved In Hot
Shutdown
financialwire.net - 6/6/08
FPL Group's (NYSE: FPL) (Current Market Cap: US$26.92 Bil.) 839-megawatt
Unit 2 reactor at the Saint Lucie nuclear power station in Florida was in a
hot shutdown after an electrical problem late Tuesday afternoon.
A circuit trip led to the loss of a heater drain pump, resulting in a trip
of a main feedwater pump that caused the water level in the steam generators
to decline. Operators stopped the reactor due to the lowering steam
generator level, according to a US Nuclear Regulatory Commission report.
Operators are working to return the unit to service, which was shut down
according to protocol.
The St Lucie station is located on Hutchinson Island in St Lucie County,
about 120 miles north of Miami.
St Lucie's Unit 1 reactor continued to operate at full power.
