Overview of Latin American oil exports to the USA

27-04-08

Five countries from Latin America are present in the list of the top 15 exporters of crude oil to the United States of America (USA) in February 2008. However, only two countries reported year-over-year increases in production while the other three reported declines.
On a sequentially basis three countries reported increases in production while two reported declines (See Table 1).

The three countries making the 10 list include Mexico (the number 3 exporter of crude oil to the USA), Venezuela (5) and Colombia (9) while Ecuador and Brazil rounded out the list at 10 and 11, respectively.
-- Mexico exported 1.231 mm bpd to the USA in February 2008, down 0.127 mm bpd or 9 % compared to 1.358 mm bpd in February 2007, but up 0.033 mm bpd or 3 % compared to January 2008.
-- Venezuela exported 0.927 mm bpd to the USA in February 2008, down 0.188 mm bpd or 17 % compared to 1.115 mm bpd in February 2007 and down 0.208 mm bpd or 18 % compared to January 2008.
-- Colombia exported 0.220 mm bpd to the USA in February 2008, up 0.147 mm bpd or 201 % compared to just 0.073 mm bpd in February 2007 and up 0.049 mm bpd or 29 % compared to January 2008.
-- Ecuador exported 0.169 mm bpd to the USA in February 2008, down 0.009 mm bpd or 5 % compared to 0.178 mm bpd in February 2007 and down 0.078 mm bpd or 32 % compared to January 2008.
-- Brazil exported 0.169 mm bpd to the USA in February 2008, up 0.066 mm bpd or 64 % compared to 0.103 mm bpd in February 2007 and flat compared to January 2008.

Canada top exporter of oil and petroleum to the USA
Preliminary monthly data on the origins of crude oil imports in February 2008 shows that 2 countries exported more than 1.50 mm bpd to the United States of America (USA). Including those countries, a total of 3 countries exported over 1.20 mm bpd to the USA (See Table 1).
The top 5 exporting countries accounted for 70 % of USA’s crude oil imports in February while the top 10 sources accounted for approximately 88 % of all USA crude oil imports.

The top sources of USA crude oil imports for February 2008 were Canada (1.888 mm bpd), Saudi Arabia (1.614 mm bpd), Mexico (1.231 mm bpd), Nigeria (0.982 mm bpd), and Venezuela (0.927 mm bpd). The rest of the 10 sources, in order, were Iraq (0.780 mm bpd), Angola (0.341 mm bpd), Kuwait (0.261 mm bpd), Colombia (0.220 mm bpd), and Ecuador (0.169 mm bpd).
Total crude oil imports averaged 9.514 mm bpd in February, which represents a decrease of 0.486 mm bpd compared to January 2008.

Canada remained the largest exporter of total petroleum in February 2008, exporting 2.419 mm bpd to the USA, which represents a decrease of 0.167 mm bpd compared to January 2008.
The second largest exporter of total petroleum was Saudi Arabia with 1.627 mm bpd.
