Glass recycling plant could save cities big bucks
March 6
A new glass recycling plant could save five Toronto-area municipalities
$10 million over the next seven years.
Stewardship Ontario and Canadian glass recycler Unical Inc. have worked out
a deal to build a glass processing plant in the greater Toronto area. The
facility will recycle glass bottles and jars collected in the cities of
Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario, and the regions of Peel, York and Durham.
Stewardship Ontario is an industry-funded group created to develop a waste
diversion program for the province.
The group has given $1.75 million to Unical to buy processing equipment. The
five municipalities stand to save $10 million in operating costs over seven
years, the length of the existing contract. They will supply a minimum of
48,000 tons of mixed glass collected from their blue box curbside recycling
programs.
