Global Solar opens new PV module plant

Thin-film photovoltaic manufacturer Global Solar Energy said Wednesday (March 5) it is opening a new solar-cell manufacturing plant.

Global Solar (Tucson, Ariz) said the first phase of manufacturing at the new plant includes volume production of its thin-film CIGS (copper indium gallium selenide) photovoltaic modules.

The company is simultaneously breaking ground on what it says will be one of the largest CIGS solar arrays, generating 750 kilowatts of electricity, while commissioning its 30-megawatt plant in Berlin. The German power plant is scheduled to open in the fall.

Global Solar claims its CIGS technology creates more electricity from the same amount of sunlight than other thin-film photovoltaic technologies.
