Nuclear Reactor Involved In Outage Returned To
Full Power
financialwire.net - March 4, 2008
A nuclear reactor owned by FPL Group (NYSE: FPL) that was shut down as part
of a chain reaction that led to a massive Florida power outage has been
returned to full power.
Unit 4 at the Turkey Point power plant 30 miles south of Miami exited its
outage and was ramped up to full power, according to the US Nuclear
Regulatory Commission. Both nuclear reactors and one natural gas unit on
site shut down on February 26 due to the loss of off-site power during a
blackout that affected about one million people in South Florida, including
about 584,000 FPL customers.
FPL said last week that the preliminary results of its investigation
indicated that human error was the primary cause of the blackout.
The natural gas unit at Turkey Point was returned to service on February 27
but FPL kept units 3 and 4 shut down to conduct maintenance not related to
the blackout. Unit 3 remained off line and was expected to be returned to
service within a week.
