A Revolutionary New Product For Stormwater Treatment

May 28, 2008

San Diego, CA - Bio Clean Environmental has released an innovation that is revolutionizing the stormwater industry, the Modular Wetlands System (MWS).

After almost ten years in the business, noting which filtration systems gave the best results, Bio Clean's engineers have designed a system that combines the benefits of all the most efficient treatment methods.

While most systems utilize one single treatment method, the MWS – Linear design incorporates screening, hydrodynamic separation, filtration and bioretention into a modular pre-cast concrete structure, which serves as a simulated wetlands area. The combination of technology and nature allows the system to treat various pollutants including fine suspended solids, trash, floatables, oil and grease, sediments, heavy metals, particulate and dissolved metals, as well as nutrients and bacteria.

The efficient "treatment train" design works diligently while the surrounding area sees only natural vegetation. "It's the perfect blend of nature and technology. When an area is aesthetically sensitive, like the recent project we did with a popular harbor in Oceanside, California, the product was a perfect fit. Heightened filtration was needed but we didn't want to jeopardize the character of the harbor. It worked out perfectly," added Kent.

"The wash down area in the harbor, is a unique situation, very different from traditional stormwater treatment situations. With continuous daily nuisance flows, large amounts of oils are flowing down the storm drain. The two dumping stations at the Oceanside Harbor area allow boats and RVs to empty their wastewater. While these areas are contained, small amounts wastewater still finds its way into the storm drain. This situation allows high amounts of bacteria to enter the existing oil water separators, which are not designed to treat and remove bacteria. We had to find an alternative technology that would be effective at removing the bacteria, including fecal coliform," explained Mo Lahsaie, Clean Water Program Coordinator, City of Oceanside Water Utilities Department.

MWS has been designed to meet and exceed current stormwater regulations by integrating technology with natural treatment processes. "We wanted to design something that went above and beyond the abilities of the average filter system. We also wanted to take advantage of the most efficient stormwater filtration system there is – nature, and we've done that. There is no other product like it," said Gregory Kent, President, Modular Wetlands.
