Duke renewables pipeline triples in 12 months; CEO defends filing

Boston (Platts)--2May2008

Duke Energy said Friday that its renewable energy development business
has increased its "pipeline" of projects to more than 3,000 MW and has 280 MW
of wind capacity under construction in Texas and Wyoming.

When Duke entered the sector in May 2007 by buying the wind business of
Tierra Energy, that pipeline consisted of about 1,000 MW in wind projects.

Lynn Good, president of Duke's commercial businesses, told an analyst
conference call that the unit expects to add 200-300 MW of renewable capacity
to its portfolio annually. She said that, in addition to wind projects, Duke's
renewables business is pursuing biomass and solar opportunities.

During the call, Duke CEO Jim Rogers defended its recent filing at the US
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission asking for permission to transfer 7,800
MW of generation assets in the Midwest to a legally separate entity.

The filing was made as it became clear that Ohio would enact a law that
would make such transfers more difficult to do.

Rogers said the plan sent to FERC "gives us a lot of flexibility on how
we finance" the planned expansion of Duke's commercial businesses. "That's a
business that we want to grow," he said, adding, "we don't contemplate" a
spinoff of those businesses, but may seek partners as the businesses expand.
