Investors call on Senate to curb greenhouse gases
May 21
More than 50 major green investors called on the U.S. Senate in a letter
to enact strong federal legislation to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
The group of investors, which included the nationīs largest public pension
fund and the worldīs largest listed hedge fund, wrote the letter, dated May
20, in advance of the upcoming Senate debate on the Lieberman-Warner climate
bill early next month.
The investors, organized by Ceres and the Investor Network on Climate Risk,
sent the letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader
Mitch McConnell. The letter called for a national climate policy to reduce
U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by at least 60 percent to 90 percent below
1990 levels by 2050. The reduction would be similar to that called for under
the Lieberman-Warner bill.
Ceres is a coalition of investors and environmental groups working with
companies to advance sustainable business practices. The Investor Network on
Climate Risk is a network of institutional investors focused on the business
impacts from climate change.
