Pittsburgh passes L.A. as most polluted city

May 1

Pittsburgh has passed Los Angeles as the most polluted U.S. city in short-term particle pollution, according to the annual American Lung Association State of the Air report.

The pollution is a cocktail of ash, soot, diesel exhaust, chemicals, metals and aerosols spiking for a few hours to several weeks.

It is the first time in the nine years the association has prepared its report that a city outside of California has been atop the list. Pittsburgh also ranked second in the category of cities with the most year-round particle pollution.

Los Angeles retained its spot at the top of the year-round particle pollution category. It also was number one in the nation in ozone pollution. The report and more information is available at the American Lung Associationīs Web site.
