U.S. consumers behind in selecting fuel efficient vehicles

Nov. 13

Car buyers in the United States trail counterparts in Europe and Japan when it comes to selecting more fuel efficient vehicles with lower carbon dioxide emissions.

JATO Dynamics, an automotive data provider, said research shows buyers in the United States "are choosing much the same cars as previously."

"Consumer green intentions are stronger than ever, but they are still voting traditionally with their wallets," said David Mitchell of JATO. "Historic larger-vehicle tastes, relatively low gas prices and poor selection of fuel-efficient vehicles all contribute toward a slow green transition."

Average mileage for cars, minivans and SUVs in the United States is 22.6 per gallon, compared with 40.3 in Europe and 40.6 in Japan, JATO reported.
