Electronics industry on right path toward sustainability

Oct. 21

The electronics industry has made progress toward environmental sustainability, but still has work ahead of it, according the first industry-wide consumer electronics sustainability report.

Among 64 electronics companies surveyed, 69% reported they actively are recycling electronic products and components, with 38% saying they reuse electronics. Electricity use has declined as much as 25% over the last three or four years among the companies that reported reduced electricity consumption. Seven of the 10 major consumer electronic companies that reported greenhouse gas emissions from 2004 to 2007 achieved a reduction per $1 million revenue.

The Consumer Electronics Association commissioned Technology Forecasters Inc. to conduct the study to assess the industry´s progress. The full report is available at www.CE.org/green.

"We are proud o our accomplishments thus far, but there is still work to be done," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the CEA. "We look forward to the day the consumer electronics industry fully achieves our collective environmental sustainability goals."
