| Group to sue government for failing to update
standards
Oct. 24
An environmental group has put the federal government on notice that it
intends to sue over the alleged failure to update emission standards for
hundreds of landfills.
Environmental Defense Fund said landfills are the nationīs second largest
source of man-made methane emissions. And, the group said, the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency has failed to update emissions standards for
new and existing landfills.
The federal agency is supposed to update emission standards for landfills
every eight years, but has failed to do so since 1996, the environmental
group said.
"Capturing the waste gas leaking from the nationīs landfills and converting
it to a local source of energy is a trifecta for the nationīs economy,
environment and energy security," said Vickie Patton, deputy general counsel
for the Environmental Defense Fund.
