Duke Energy to install solar panels at 850 sites in N.C.

Sept. 4

Duke Energy Corp. is plans to install photovoltaic solar panels next year at up to 850 sites in North Carolina as part of a proposed $100 million solar plan.

The utility is seeking bids from companies to supply solar panels, electrical equipment and installation services. It plans to install solar panels on roofs and on the ground at homes, schools, office buildings, shopping malls, warehouse and large manufacturing facilities. Duke would compensate the site owners based on the size of the solar installation.

The electricity generated through the $100 million program would be at least 16 megawatts, enough to power 2,600 homes. It would begin installing the solar panels early next year and be finished by late 2010.
