EPA adds six new hazardous waste sites to national list

Sept. 3

The U.S EPA is adding six new hazardous waste sites that pose risks to human health and the environment to the National Priorities List of Superfund sites.

The agency also proposed adding 11 other sites to the list.

Superfund is the federal program that investigates and cleans up the most complex uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites in the country.

To date, the agency has listed 1,587 sites on the NPL, and it has deleted 329 of those sites, resulting in 1,258 sites currently on the list. With the proposal of the 11 new sites, there are 64 proposed sites awaiting final agency action: 58 in the general Superfund section and six in the federal facilities section. There are a total of 1,322 final and proposed sites.

The EPA tries to identify and locate the parties potentially responsible for the contamination of Superfund sites. For the newly listed sites without viable potentially responsible parties, the agency investigates the extent of the contamination before starting significant cleanup.

The six sites the EPA recently added to the list are in Humboldt, Ariz.; Creede, Colo.; Pompano Beach, Fla.; Aberdeen, N.C.; Troy, Ohio, and Greenville, Texas.

The 11 newly proposed sites are in Rialto, Calif.; Tampa, Fla.; Thonotosassa, Fla.; East Chicago, Ind.; Frederick, Md.; Milford, N.J.; Dayton, Ohio; New Carlisle, Ohio; Ambler, Pa.; McCormic, S.C., and Tooele County, Utah.

Federal Register notices and supporting documents for these final and proposed sites are available online at www.epa.gov/superfund/sites/npl/current.htm  .
