Grant will pay for teaching students about energy

The school system recently received a grant from Dominion Virginia Power that would enlighten students students about energy and energy conservation.

Dominion representative Earnest Green presented a $7,000 check as a part of the Dominion Educational Partnership Grant.

The grant will be used to give students more awareness of energy efficiency and conservation along with other energy-related topics.

The grant presentation preceded a vote to move forward with a performance management contract with Massachusetts-based NORESCO.

The motion would allow NORESCO to do an energy audit at county schools in order to inform the School Board of changes that could be made to make the buildings more energy efficient, thereby saving the school system money.

The School Board also approved a middle school wrestling time for the current academic year. Dinwiddie Middle School Principal Trenia Harris said the idea came about last year before secondary schools were restructured.

This year there will be no cost to the school system for the program as materials were donated and a coach volunteered.

The team is expected to bridge the gap between recreation wrestling and the high school program, according to a memo by Chad Knowles, director of student activities at Dinwiddie High School.

Also approved was the budget calendar for the 2009-2010 fiscal year.

The calendar includes the distribution of a proposed line-item budget by Feb. 17, 2009, and a joint meeting with the Board of Supervisors for a budget discussion at a date to be determined.

The budget for the next fiscal year will be available for review on the Internet.
