House approves energy bill to allow off-shore drilling

Sept. 17

The House approved an energy bill last night by a vote of 236-189 to open additional waters of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to oil and gas drilling and exploration.

The measure passed over the objections of Republicans, who complained the bill hadnīt been introduced until late the previous night and that they hadnīt had the opportunity to read it. Republicans also complained the bill, while appearing to open additional waters to drilling, actually permanently locked up much of the prime oil rich areas.

Democrats called it a compromise bill that opened additional areas to drilling while also spurring development of alternative energy and energy conservation.

The measure still faces hurdles in the Senate.
