U.S. Treasury Dept. names environment, energy
secretary

The U.S. Treasury Department has named a Harvard-educated economist with
a science background to serve as the departmentīs deputy assistant secretary
for environment and energy.
William A. "Billy" Pizer was charged by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson
with developing and carrying out the Treasury Departmentīs responsibilities
relating to environment and energy issues. Specifically, Pizer will help
oversee initiatives such as the multi-billion dollar Clean Technology Fund
-- established by the federal government to help developing countries adopt
clean energy technologies. Pizer also will help oversee federal financing
for the Tropical Forest Conservation Act, which helps other nations fund
efforts to preserve tropical forests. Pizer also will contribute to the
development of domestic and international policy options to address climate
change.
Pizer spent the past 12 years at Resources for the Future, a nonpartisan
research center where his duties included environmental policy research. He
also has served as a senior economist at the National Commission on Energy
Policy and as a senior staff economist at the White House Council of
Economic Advisers.
He has a bachelorīs degree in physics from the University of North Carolina
and a doctorate in economics from Harvard University.
