US House curbs schedule due to Ike, delays vote on energy bill

Washington (Platts)--11Sep2008

With Hurricane Ike threatening the Gulf of Mexico, US House Speaker Nancy
Pelosi canceled the chamber's business for Friday and put off until Monday a
vote on a comprehensive energy bill.

Pelosi's office said the House would adjourn when it completes its
business for Thursday. The California Democrat had said previously that she
intended to bring the energy bill to a vote late this week or early next week.

"It is anticipated that early next week, the House will consider a
comprehensive energy bill," Pelosi press secretary Drew Hammill, said in a
statement Thursday. Hammill said the House will reconvene Monday, with votes
on bills scheduled to start at 6:30 pm EDT.

Pelosi on Wednesday outlined a planned bill that would expand oil and gas
drilling in federal waters, extend tax credits for renewable energy production
and pay for that extension by canceling tax breaks for the oil and gas
industry.

In the Senate, an aide to Majority Whip Richard Durbin said votes may be
cancelled but an energy summit scheduled for Friday would still be held.
Majority Leader Harry Reid called for the summit with energy specialists to
help the Senate develop energy legislation.
