Vestas expands in Colorado

PORTLAND, OREGON, USA, September 4, 2008. Vestas is building a new blade factory and a nacelle assembly factory in Brighton, Colorado, USA.

The nacelle factory will be Vestas’ first of its kind in the USA, and the new blade factory will supplement the existing blade factory in Windsor, Colorado.

The nacelle assembly factory will have an annual production capacity of 1,400 nacelles, and the blade factory will have an annual output of 1,800 blades. With the new facilities, Vestas will have a total wind turbine blade capacity in the USA of 3,600 per year.

The blade factory will be fully operational in the first half of 2010, and the nacelle factory is expected to run at full capacity in mid 2010.

Brighton was chosen due to its central location, easy access to rail and highway infrastructure, and proximity to Vestas’ Windsor facility. In order to establish a complete supply chain for the factory in Brighton, Vestas Nacelles will set up a purchasing office in Chicago, Illinois to be close to the extensive northeast network of suppliers.

Vestas will also build a tower factory in Colorado with a capacity of 900 towers per year, and a combined Technology and Production Engineering office will be established at the Brighton facility to equip the factories with the right quality and continuous improvement competences.
