Power and energy professionals throughout the world who are
interested in attending the 2009 IEEE PES General Meeting, July
26-30, 2009 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada can review the General
Meeting program and updates at

register for the General Meeting and to make their hotel
reservations now. Early registration discounts are available to
attendees on or before June 30, 2009.
The General Meeting will be held at the Calgary Telus Convention
Centre and the hotels listed below. Conference registration and most
technical sessions and many committee meetings will be held at Telus
Convention Centre Monday through Thursday. Please click on the hotel

Note: The IEEE Power & Energy Society requests that
registrants support the 2009 General Meeting by booking their
accommodations exclusively at the conference hotels.
Premier Event
The 2009 IEEE PES General Meeting is the premier event for power and
energy professionals from around the world. The conference is
designed and organized to provide an international forum for
attendees to promote, share and discuss a myriad of issues and
developments that relate to the field of power and energy. The host
utility for the 2009 event is ALTALINK.
During the meeting, attendees will have the opportunity to
participate in many high-quality technical sessions, several
tutorials and technical tours, committee meetings, networking
opportunities, PES awards, social functions and more. The General
Meeting will feature hundreds of technical panel and paper sessions
scheduled each day of the conference. Continuing Education Units
will be awarded for tutorial sessions. Professional Development
Hours (PDH) forms will be available at the General Meeting for the
use of conference attendees. Also planned throughout the week are a
student program and several entertaining companion activities.
The PES Members Meeting will be held on Monday, July 27th
beginning at 8:00 am in the Telus Convention Centre. PES President
Wanda K. Reder will moderate the Plenary Session which begins
immediately following the Members Meeting. The keynote speaker will
be Kurt E. Yeager, retired President and Chief Executive Officer of
the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). Mr. Yeager is
currently Executive Director of the non-profit Galvin Electricity
Initiative. His talk is entitled "The Path to Perfect Power."
Super Sessions
Supporting the theme of Investment in Workforce and Innovation
for Power Systems are the following Super Session topics:
Transmission Capacity Enhancements in the 21st Century
- Transmission, distribution and integrated resource planning
- Designing transmission for the electric market environment
- Transmission adequacy in the presence of large energy sources
- Considerations in transmission system design for renewable

- Active and reactive power supplied by wind power installations

Technical Tours
A number of outstanding technical tours are being offered. Attendees
should note that a one-day or full conference registration is
required to participate in these tours. Advance registration is
required for all tours so that an appropriate security clearance can
be obtained for each registered individual. As with previous General
Meetings, there will be no on-site technical tour registration and
all tours will be offered on a first-come, first serve basis. Valid
photo ID must be presented at the beginning of each tour. The

The Power & Energy Education Committee will present five full-day
and one half-day tutorials during the meeting. Full or one-day
conference registration is required in order to attend either

Plain Talk Series of
Courses
Power Systems Courses for Non-Engineering Professionals are planned.
As an attendee you will gain insight into the concerns of engineers,
the demands of regulators and consumer groups and a perspective of
how these factors play a major role in the operation of today's
electric power systems. Attendees should visit the General Meeting
web site often as courses may be added to the schedule.

Poster Session
A popular feature of the PES General Meeting technical program is
the Poster Session. All poster session papers will be presented at a
combined session on Monday, July 27 from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm. The
Student Poster Contest will be co-located with the Poster Session.
Complementary hors d'oeuvres will be served and cash bar will be
available. Attendee or Companion badges are required for entrance to
the Poster Session. Co-Located Events: Two events will be co-located
with the Poster Session, they include: IEEE Fellows Reception and
the Candidates Reception
Student Program
An exciting student program for IEEE PES Student Members, a social
event, the Student/Faculty/Industry luncheon will include a Job
Fair, and a Poster Contest is planned. Student members are invited
to participate in all other aspects of the General Meeting. Students
must register for the meeting at a nominal fee in addition to
registering for the student program.
Companion Activities
A full schedule of companion activities has been planned by the
Calgary Local Organizing Committee during the meeting. Registered
companions are invited to mingle and relax in the Companion
Hospitality Lounge that will be located at the Fairmont Palliser
Hotel.
A complimentary breakfast will be served Monday through Thursday
from 7:00 am-9:30 am. A companion's badge is required for admittance
to the Hospitality Lounge.
A full program of tours and activities has been planned for
registered companions. Children are most welcome on most of the
tours with parental supervision. A companion's badge is required in

Participate in the welcome reception at Heritage Park Historical
Village

on Sunday, July 26 from 6:00 pm-9:00 pm. Transportation is provided
throughout the evening with pickup and drop off at the Telus
Convention Centre beginning at 5:45 pm. The village offers an
authentic historical experience from three key periods: the 1860s
fur trading era, a 1880s rustic pre-railway settlement and the
bustling 1910 prairie railroad town. Attendee or companion badges
are required for attendance to the reception.
Murder Mystery Dinner Theater will be staged on Wednesday, July
29 from 6:30 pm to 11:00 pm at the Catch restaurant. The evening
includes a three course dinner with two glasses of wine per person
and the Murder Mystery Dinner Theater. The price is $80.00US per
person

Joint
Symposium in Calgary
PES and CIGRE are pleased to announce a Joint CIGRE PES Symposium
focusing on the Integration of Wide-Scale Renewable Resources into
the Power Delivery System. The symposium will be held in Calgary,

About Calgary
