EPA presents 2008 Energy Star awards to 89 businesses

April 15

The U.S. EPA has presented 2008 Energy Star awards to 89 businesses and organizations across the country for their accomplishments in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency.

They were selected from more than 15,000 partners in the Energy Star program.

The Energy Star program helped Americans saved $19 billion on their energy bills in 2008 and avoided greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of 29 million vehicles, according to the EPA.

To date, 940,000 new homes and more than 6,000 office buildings, schools, hospitals and public buildings have earned the Energy Star. Since 2000, more than 2.5 billion Energy Star qualified products have been sold.

The EPA introduced the Energy Star program in 1992 as a voluntary partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy efficiency.
