Governor's Renewable Energy Program Makes Strides

BOULDER, Colo., Apr 16, 2009 -- BUSINESS WIRE

Governor Ritter's Renewable Energy Technology Program is starting to produce results, creating clean-tech companies here in Colorado that are already making a global impact on alternative energy development and controlling climate change.

"Through State economic development grants, and with the vision of Tom Plant and Seth Portner of the Governor's Energy Office [GEO] behind us, the Boulder Innovation Center's Energy Program has assisted dozens of promising start-up companies over the last year," said BIC Executive Director Tim Bour. "One of the best examples is ION Engineering, founded by scientists at the University of Colorado. Their discoveries have led to the first integration of ionic liquid solutions into carbon capture and greenhouse emissions control technology."

"With support of the BIC and Energy Program Manager Linda Olsson, ION Engineering is a Colorado start-up that has sparked international industry and investment attention," said ION CEO Alfred "Buz" Brown, PhD. "As a result, and thanks to the GEO's strategic imperative, we are well on our way to bringing this breakthrough technology to worldwide energy markets."

GEO and OEDIT (Office of Economic Development & International Trade) NEED (New Energy Economic Development) grants awarded last year to the BIC have been key to launching the BIC's Renewable Energy and Clean-Tech Program, and in transferring technology from university research labs to commercialization. "The success in our first year has exceeded all expectations," said Bour. "Thanks to Gov. Ritter's progressive energy policies facilitating industry, academic and government cooperation, the BIC has created one of the nation's highest quality advisor and investment networks in clean-tech business development."
