Ohio Edison to switch from coal-fired to biomass
plant
Aug. 12
Ohio Edison Co. is transforming a coal-fired power plant along the
Ohio River to primarily burn renewable biomass fuels, the power company
said.
Two units of the R.E. Burger plant near Shadyside, Ohio, will make the
switch that will reduce sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and carbon
dioxide emissions. The plant will be the largest coal-fired electric
utility plant in the country to switch to renewable biomass fuels, the
company said.
The biomass will include wood from waste tree trimmings and dedicated
sustainable nurseries, agricultural crops, grasses and vegetation waste
or products, according to the federal justice and environmental
agencies.
Ohio Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., agreed to the switch in
a consent decree filed in federal court in Columbus, Ohio. This decree
modifies an earlier agreement. The earlier decree gave the company three
options to reduce emissions at the Burger plant -- shut down, install a
pollution scrubber or use natural gas.
