EPA orders Thomas Exploration Co. to halt discharges

Dec. 10

The U.S. EPA has ordered the Thomas Exploration Co. to halt its discharges in Okmulgee County, Okla., until contamination can be removed from the nearby river and soil.

The Tulsa, Okla., company was accused of violating the federal Clean Water Act after an Oct. 13 inspection. The EPA said its inspectors found unauthorized discharges of oil field brine contaminating nearby soil and a tributary of the Deep Fork River.

The EPA has ordered the company to cease all discharges of pollutants from the facility and remove all brine and contaminated soils from the flow path located between the facility and the river tributary. The company must remove all brine from the tributary and within 30 days provide written of completion.
