Water And Energy Nexus Critical To Climate ChangeDecember 9, 2009 "Major policy gaps are preventing the full recognition of the link between water, energy and climate change. Decision makers in the international community must recognise and create a policy environment that supports efforts to address the major water issues arising from climate change", said Dr David Garman, President of the International Water Association (IWA). IWA together with Danish Water and Waste Water Association (DANVA), have today presented Denmark's environment minister, Ms Connie Hedegaard a message for the world's decision makers from the IWA Water and Energy conference held in Copenhagen in late October. The conclusions outline the commitment from the water professionals to tackle climate change adaptation and mitigation. "There is a need for integration of water and energy policies. Having the right pricing, policy and regulatory frameworks are critical to encourage behavioural changes, motivate innovation and ensure sustainable use of water and energy. It will allow simultaneous adaptation and mitigation to climate change." "The water industry has already developed a significant number of solutions which will reduce climate change related impacts, now we need politicians to put supporting measures in place", Dr Garman continued. "Technology applications already exist to improve efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Technology exists to generate renewable energy from biogas and recover heat from water. These can present an alternative to fossil fuels." As the global voice of water professionals, IWA together with DANVA will advocate for an integrated approach of the water and energy nexus during the COP15 meetings next week.
