Carbon-neutral power key to climate challenge: EURELECTRIC

London (Platts)--13Feb2009

Delivering a carbon-neutral power supply through a competitive energy
market is key to solving energy-climate challenges, the president of the
European electricity industry group EURELECTRIC, Lars G Josefsson, said in a
statement Friday.

Speaking to EU policymakers at Sustainable Energy Week in Brussels,
Josefsson said a carbon emission reduction of 60%-80% can be achieved by 2050,
according to the statement.

Low-carbon electricity will help both to reduce carbon emissions and
boost energy supply security, Josefsson said.

The necessary replacement of the EU power-generation fleet by 2030 could
provide an opportunity to head toward a carbon-neutral electricity system, he
added.

EURELECTRIC is studying the steps toward a carbon-neutral sector by 2050,
the statement said.

The plan will consider the time scale for renewable energy expansion,
positioning carbon capture and storage technologies and the use of nuclear
power, it added.

Developing network infrastructure is crucial to provide a broad mix of
supply, with clear market signals from a "robust" international carbon-trading
market necessary by 2050, Josefsson said in the statement.

EURELECTRIC represents the European electricity industry in public
affairs, in particular in relation to EU legislative institutions in order to
promote the interests of its members at a political level.
