Texas wind farm to expand to 781.5 megawatts by 2009
Dec. 30
A new project could claim the title of largest worldīs wind farm and a
couple more states could see renewable energy portfolio standards in 2009,
according to the American Wind Energy Association.
E.ON Climate and Renewables North America Inc. plans to expand its Roscoe,
Texas, wind farm to 781.5 megawatts by mid-2009, eclipsing FPL Energy LLCīs
736-megawatt Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center in Taylor and Nolan counties,
Texas. It has been considered the worldīs larges wind project since coming
online in 2006.
The AWEA also predicts one or two more states could require utilities to
generate a percentage of electricity from renewable energy in 2009.
Currently, 28 states have renewable energy portfolio standards, also known
as renewable electricity standards. Indiana could be the next state to
implement the requirement.
Wind power also again could be the second largest source of new U.S. power
generating capacity in 2008, right behind natural gas. It would be the fifth
consecutive year new wind capacity would be ranked second in new generation.
