| Anaerobic digester powers Ore. fruit and vegetable
farm
July 17
A fruit and vegetable farm in Corvallis, Ore., says it has started
operating a ·first-of-its-kindö anaerobic digester in North America to
create biogas from food waste.
Stahlbush Island Farms Inc. said the digester will provide enough energy to
meet the needs of approximately 1,100 homes or twice as much power as the
farm and its food processing plant uses each year.
Fruit and vegetable waste is used as a feedstock for the digester, which
creates biogas that’s then used to fuel a combined heat and power system.
The project, which uses large tanks to hold the fruit and vegetable matter,
cost $10 million and took 14 months to complete.
Stahlbush Island Farms grows fruits and vegetables on nearly 5,000 acres in
Oregon’s Willamette Valley.
