Report predicts 1.7 million hybrid electric vehicles by 2015

July 8

New research predicts that 1.7 million plug-in hybrid electric vehicles will be on the road worldwide by 2015.

Pike Research of Boulder, Colo., a market research and consulting firm that studies clean technology markets, said the plug-in vehicles will follow a "similar adoption pattern" as hybrid electric vehicles over the past few years.

"PHEV programs will focus initially on the small car segment, which will represent 80% of sales in 2015," said research analyst Dave Hurst.

The United States will be the leading PHEV market as more than 610,000 vehicles will be sold over the next five years, Pike Research said. The report is titled "Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles."
