Thank Senator McCain for Leadership on Nuclear Weapons
A letter from The Union of Concerned
Scientists
Nuclear weapons are a grave and growing danger to
humanity. They have become a security liability rather than
an asset, and U.S. nuclear weapons policy needs to be
changed to reflect new global realities.
Earlier this month, Senator John McCain acknowledged this
crucial fact when he gave a remarkable speech on the Senate
floor in which he endorsed a number of critical measures to
reduce the nuclear threat as well as the goal of a world
free of nuclear weapons. Please write to Senator
McCain to thank him for his leadership and for building
critical bipartisan support.

Contact Senator McCain today
Dear Senator,
As a constituent, I thank you for the tremendous speech you
gave on the Senate floor on June 3, in which you gave your
support to and provided increased credibility for the goal
of a world free of nuclear weapons and to several specific
measures that will make our country safer and move us closer
to that difficult but achievable goal.
I fully agree that success in this effort demands strong
U.S. leadership and bipartisan support, and that the time
has come, as you say, to “reduce dramatically the number of
nuclear weapons in the world’s arsenals.” In the near
future, I hope you will do everything you can to build
bipartisan support for the expected follow-on agreement with
Russia on the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty to
significantly reduce the number of U.S. and Russian nuclear
weapons, for Senate ratification of the Comprehensive Test
Ban Treaty, and for a global ban on the production
of weapons-grade materials.
This is a time of great urgency and opportunity and we must
seize the moment to prevent the further spread of nuclear
weapons, materials, and technology. I urge you to do all you
can to further raise this issue and convince your Senate
colleagues that we must act now to reduce the threat posed
by nuclear weapons. |
