Ga. county to power homes with gas-to-energy project
March 10
Houston County, Ga., expects to produce enough energy to power "several
thousand homes" from a new gas-to-energy project at its landfill.
The county has selected SCS Engineers to expand a methane gas recovery
system to an area of the 200-acre landfill that closed last year.
An existing gas-to-energy project was installed by SCS in 2003 at the
landfill in Kathleen, Ga.
"We already have an active system working in phase 1, which was closed in
1990. Now weŽre expanding and placing new wells in the phase 2 area, which
is a 38-acre section that was closed last year," county Director of
Operations Tommy Stalnaker said.
"The estimate is that weŽll have enough methane for them to generate
electricity for several thousand homes," said Commissioner Tom McMichael.
The county is in negotiations with Flint Energies on a deal where the power
company would build an electricity generating plant at the landfill fueled
by methane, said SCS, a company that focuses on solid waste management and
site remediation projects.
