Global steel can recycling rate sets 68% record in 2007

March 26

The global steel can recycling rate reached its highest recorded level in 2007, according to the World Steel Association.

The 68% rate was a slight bump from 67% in 2006 and is the third straight year it has increased. Thirty-seven countries reported recycling 7.9 million tons of steel cans in 2007. Belgium and Germany had the highest steel can recycling rates, 93% and 91%, respectively. The United States reported a 65% rate, recycling some 1.7 million tons of steel cans.

"Our data shows that steel recycling is well-established in almost all regions of the world," said Julie Renner, chairwoman of Worldsteel´s committee on packaging.

Recycling 7.9 million tons of steel cans avoided more than 14 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions in 2007, according to Worldsteel.
