Energy Department to give $8.5M to wind energy
projects
May 7
The U.S. Energy Department will give as much as $8.5 million in total
funding to 53 new wind energy projects.
Increasing wind energy generation is critical in achieving the Obama
administration’s goals for clean energy and creating new green jobs, Energy
Secretary Steven Chu said. He unveiled details about the funding by video at
the WindPower 2009 Conference in Chicago.
The Energy Department´s ·20% Wind Energy by 2030ö report found that the
nation possesses affordable wind energy resources in excess of those needed
to generate 20% of the United States´ electricity needs. The report also
identified major challenges including: investment in a national transmission
system; larger electric load balance areas and better regional planning;
reduction in wind turbine capital costs; improvement of turbine performance;
siting and environmental issues, and workforce development. The full report
is available at www1.eere.energy.gov/windandhydro.
Award amounts and further details about the projects selected for funding
