NACOG is receiving approximately $7.5 million and is currently
accepting applications for the Weatherization Assistance program. The
program enables low-income families to permanently reduce their energy
bills by making their homes more energy efficient. Assistance is based on
need with highest priority given to the elderly and disabled applicants.
NACOG has administered the program in Apache, Navajo, Coconino and
Yavapai counties for more than 25 years with funding from the U.S.
Department of Energy and APS and Unisource energy companies. They estimate
around 160 projects are completed each year in the four counties at an
average cost of $4,500 each.
On average, weatherization reduces heating bills by 32 percent and
overall energy bills by about $350 per year at current prices. NACOG
anticipates weatherization of approximately 1,050 additional homes over
the next three years.
For qualified homeowners or renters, NACOG will perform a complete
energy audit of the home, including testing for carbon monoxide. If
determined cost effective, the following services may be provided:
insulation of attics, ceilings and floors; weather stripping and caulking;
replacement of broken glass, windows and damaged doors; interior storm
windows; patching; furnace repair or replacement; insulation of plugs for
electrical outlets and switches; repair or replacement of evaporative
cooling systems; insect screen repair or installation; shade screening and
roof coating for minor leaks and heat reflections.
With the new funds, NACOG hopes to improve the current wait time,
after applicants are approved, from 24 months to a few months.
