Two New DC Power Standards Coming, Are You Ready?

You have probably heard about efforts to develop a 380Vdc power standard for Data Centers and other critical facilities.

You may not be as familiar with a larger effort to develop a 24Vdc power standard for commercial, industrial and residential buildings.

If you are involved with ac-dc power supplies, dc-dc converters, lighting ballasts, fractional and sub-fractional motor drives, or back-up power systems, these new standards will impact your products and your customers.

You can be part of the process, hear first-hand about the current status of these standard-development efforts, and have input to the development of both of these standards by attending Darnell’s up-coming Green Building Power Forum (GBPF). Or you can sit out the process and hope for the best.

Two of the many dc-power topics to be covered at Darnell’s GBPF will be:

  • Ben Hartman, Chairman, EMerge Alliance Technical Committee will give a status report and provide insights into how the first national effort to establish a 24Vdc power standard for buildings is being developed, and what the outlook is for its international promulgation.
  • Brian Fortenbery, Program Manager, and Dennis Symanski, Sr. Project Manager, both with the Electric Power Research Institute will host the EPRI/LBNL DC Power Partners Workshop that will identify the current status and future plans for the development of dc power distribution including: business case considerations, safety factors, quantification of the energy savings and reliability benefits, standardization issues, and so on.

Plus, you’ll hear Brian Patterson, Chairman of the EMerge Alliance, discuss how DC Power and Distributed Controls Combine in New Standards for Commercial Buildings. And Brian Davies, Director of Engineering, Anderson Power Products, and Chairman of the DC Connector Standardization effort at the International Electrotechnical Institute (IEC), will discuss Development of a DC Appliance Connector for Telecommunications Equipment.

The GBPF will also include discussions of practical commercial implementations of dc power in buildings, such as Steven Riberio, developer of the “world’s greenest building,” discussing How Independence Station Earned the Highest LEEDs Building Rating in History, Using DC-Powered LED and Fluorescent Lighting, DC-Powered Servers, DC-Powered Elevators, and More.

Darnell’s Green Building Power Forum will be a “must-attend” event for anyone interested in dc-powering. If you attend only one event this year, Darnell’s GBPF should be that one. It’s that important for your future plans.
